Tougaloo Water Jug

Oil on canvas

40 X 30

While atttending Tougaloo Art Colony one summer, I visited the museum there, which was filled with all kinds of objects from the African continent, including a collection of leather water jugs.  This one was particularly interesting because of all the detail and the dark red color.  In the glass case next to it were several dozen handmade iron or bronze crosses from Africa, so I sketched many them in my journal.

The shapes and designs of some of the crosses are depicted in the tiles surrounding the leather water jug.  (This is a bad photo and I will replace soon.)
