Wakulla Banana I

Acrylic on canvas

48 X 36

This painting was my transition piece to using tile borders on a series of paintings.  I had painted a full canvas with this banana tree, and it just seemed too big.  I needed to crop it without having to start over, so I thought about trying a border.  It seemed to work for me so I did it on many more paintings.

One workshop instructor at a critique did not approve of borders, advising against it, but I was painting the image for myself, not him.  I liked it; it said what I wanted to say.

I love the designs in illuminated manuscripts, nearly all of which have borders.  Happily, I’m not the only one who likes them.
